Basic BMW Maintenence and trouble spots |
 |
 |
|
| |
Brake Fluid - BMW recommends performing a brake fluid flush every 2 years, regardless of mileage. Brake fluid absorbs water from the atmosphere, eventually accumulating enough moisture to cause brake system components to rust internally. changing the fluid helps protect the expensive components of your brake system.

| |
Coolant - BMW recommends replacing your coolant every 3 years for older vehicles and every 4 years for vehicles using the extended life coolant. Coolant has additives to protect the cooling system and over time, these additives break down.

Power Steering Fluid - Like coolant, power steering fluid has additives which inhibit foaming and protect the seals in the steering rack and the pump. Over time, the additives break down and the system accumulates small wear particles. We recommend replacing the fluid every 3 years or when it becomes discolored.

Microfilter - This isn't a problem area, but something to be aware of. A microfilter is installed to filter contaminants out of the cabin air. The only questionable part of this decision was its placement on many cars. Often replacing it requires removal of the glovebox, part of the air ducting and some electronics. The difficulty of replacement results in it sometimes being ignored, resulting in inadequate airflow through the system. Sometimes you may believe the A/C is failing when it just needs a new filter. |

Brake Light Switch - The brake light switch will begin to cause a "Brake Light Circuit" warning intermittently. This will continue until the switch is replaced and it is good to replace all 3 bulbs at this time. (For pre-'99 cars only) |
